So today the Wall Street Journal published an article on really had me thinking about the censorship liabilities of computer manufacturers or in fact all manufacturers.
If you don’t feel like reading the article, basically China is asking any computers sold in their country have to come pre-installed government software. Basically this software will block and shut down programs that show pornography, show sensitive words, or basically allow the government to control what their citizens get to see on the computer.
Now this puts loads of pressure on HP, Dell, Apple, and Lenovo as to how they conduct business with China. This begs the question, should manufacturers be forced to censor their own products?
My Take On This
As a citizen in a democratic country I desperately wish for the computer manufacturers to refuse to give in to China’s orders. But I know that is not going to happen.
Believe it or not, the company that acts to make this censorship a convenience to China will gain the most profit. So, now China is completely censored.
Great, since I wrote this article I will probably be blocked from China. Ugh I hate this.
